Kiyomizu-dera 清水寺, Japan

Getting There: 

It is easier to get there by bus; the station is only 10 minutes away from the temple.

(bus) From Kyoto Station, board bus 100 or 206. It takes around 15 minutes to get to Gojo-zaka or Kiyomizu-michi. The bus would pass by several other famous sightseeing spots like – Sanjusangendo and Kyoto National Museum. (Tip: follow the crowd)

or (train) Get down at Kiyomizu-Gojo Station on the Eihan Main Line. Kiyomizu-dera is a 20 minute walk from the station. 

Cost: 300 yen – no closing days


Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) directly translates to “Pure Water temple”. Being one of the most celebrated Buddhist temples in Japan, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994. The temple is most famous for it’s wooden stage that protrudes from atop a hill, providing a stunning view of the temple park during Sakura season and Fall. From the stage, you also get a birds’ eye view of Kyoto city.
